The death toll in Gaza: The cost of war | The Economist

a necessary interruption

“Why is it so very strange” I think
about this matter, almost daily, things
we would have better spent on newer clothes,
or yesterday’s much needed repairs, instead,
alarming things, better than any slogans,
announce superior indignation — both sides
declaring Truth with them. We are between
those Ones that care too much and then those Others
who care even more. “So where had we be best?”
I think again “In Xanadu perhaps?
For sacred rivers at least are underground.”
