The Bat and I

I was on the balcony enjoying
The gentle night sounds
And the slowly falling rain;
The raindrops streaking
Through the light of the streetlamp
And each trace of it spoke
Of the depth of the night.

A bat flustered past
And the streetlamp’s light
Glowed dimly through
The membrane of its wings
As it stopped
On the tree just off the balcony.
It waited there a moment,
And I could feel it looking at me.

There we were
Two strangers on a rainy night,
Each to his own world
Each to his own business.
But we shared a moment there
In the dim light of the streetlamp
